Did you know that Friday, September 13th was National Blame Someone Else Day?
Well it was and if you are like most people (including me) you didn’t have a problem fitting in.
You know those national day calendars that tell us when it’s national chocolate chip cookie day, or national margarita day. I would like to propose a new national day… Called Take Responsibility Day or It IS MY Fault Day. Maybe there already is a day for this, and even if there is – I think we should extend this out - from one day to one week - to one month - to one year and then – every day for the rest of our lives.
LET’S START WITH ALL YOU RESTAURANT OWNERS OUT THERE:
Please pay careful attention to what I am about to say…
Everything is YOUR Fault… It is ALL Your Fault…
You are the person who started the restaurant. You are the one who dreamed up the concept, picked the location and put up the money to make the restaurant a reality – how can you possibly blame anything on your managers or the 20 year old college kid, who has only worked for you for about two weeks..?
If you really want to know who screwed up – go look in the mirror… That’s the guy who needs his ass kicked. That’s right - The man in the mirror… That’s You… and Me… BOTH…
The first thing that we need to do as restaurant owners is realize that WE are the ones who are screwing up. We are the ones who hired the managers to run the restaurant. We are the ones who have either explained the goal and the mission to them or not.
We are the ones who are setting the standards and creating the culture inside our restaurants. As the owner – it is your duty to encourage your managers and coaches to be 1% better today than they were yesterday.
Now - LET’S TALK TO YOU MANAGERS AND CHEF’S OUT THERE…
You are RESPONSIBLE for EVERYTHING that happens – GOOD or BAD! In your restaurant. You are responsible for YOURSELF and your performance and your attitude. You are responsible for YOUR people - their performance and their attitudes. That’s right, you hired them and now it is YOUR job and YOUR duty to train them.
My little farm girl wife says – your only as good as the person who trained you.
As the manager - It is your duty - to encourage your people to strive to be 1% better today than they were yesterday. It’s time to STOP blaming the Owner. It’s time to stop blaming your people. If you are not happy with the way things are going – FIX IT! That is why you are here - you are here to achieve results. Managers are not measured by the hour, they are measured by RESULTS!!!
LET’S FIND A BETTER WAY TO DO THIS – TOGETHER…
IT IS MY FAULT… It’s ALL MY Fault…
I’m sick of living like this, I’m sick and tired, of being mad and pissed off all the time… There has to be a better way… and fortunately there is. Everything is happening between our ears. Nothing is permanent. We can change anything we want in a nano second.
It is our PERCEPTION of reality that makes a thing good or bad. It is our perception that makes the quality of our food, drinks and service good or bad. Our job is to define the GOAL and then hire people to help us achieve it. If they don’t know what the goal is or how to do the work - THEY will fail and – so will we.
The job of the owner is to build the restaurant and hire managers to run the restaurant.
The duty of the owner is to support, teach and coach the managers.
The job of the managers is to hire the front line employees. That’s the people who wait on the customers, make the drinks, cook the food, wash the dishes - and mop the floor at the end of the shift.
The job of the front line employees is to take care of the customers. The duty of the employees and team members is to love the customer and deliver the customer promise… Day after day, after day.
The job of the customer is to pay the bill at the end of the meal.
If we take good care of the customer they will come back. If we take GREAT care of the customer they will come back AND bring their friends AND they will tell everyone they know about how great we are. This is called a word of mouth referral. This is how you build a great restaurant, one happy client at a time.
Remember this, - Advertising is the price we pay for being average…
It is YOUR JOB and YOUR DUTY to build a business that will stand the test of time.
This is not a sprint. Restauranting is a LONG TERM Game. The objective is to build GREAT relationships with everyone you meet. The people who do this the best – get the best reward!
It’s time to step up and take responsibility for your life and your actions.
It’s time to stop blaming other people for your problems…
It’s time to start being the happy, positive influence that you ARE.
It’s time to spread the love… It’s time to be Happy..!
It’s time to start living the Dream – Your Dream!!!
